Program Abstract

This module offers a basic introduction about how some selected major appliances operate. It covers the main components often used in major appliances (gas and electric), how some major appliances use energy to generate heat, and common safety and thermal protection devices.

Applied examples of the operation and control processes are drawn from major residential appliances, including cooktops, ovens, ranges, refrigerators, freezers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, and dehumidifiers. The module concludes with a brief explanation of evidentiary issues involving major appliances at the fire scene and provides guidance on retaining evidence.

This module can be watched standalone and also functions as a pre-requisite for IAAI's Appliances Fires Residential Course. The Appliance Fires Residential Course covers how appliances fail and cause fires with examples and demonstrations of how to evaluate appliances as a potential fire cause.
